Happy Friday, dear ones! I hope your weekend is looking wonderful :) Coming Up in the Liturgical Year: Today is the Feast of St. Peter and St. Paul! In the Garden: So many beautiful tomatoes. We don't really buy tomatoes from the grocery store so summertime is our one chance to cook with tomatoes and it's such a treat! Orphans of the Storm
“Where can we hide in fair weather, we orphans of the storm?" I'll know you're a kindred spirit if you can name that quote. Tropical Storm Debby finally cleared out on Tuesday afternoon. As a native Floridian, there’s something exciting and nostalgic about weathering a big storm. It makes me feel like a little girl. Despite having to be cooped up for three days, the kids were lambs and we … [Read more...]
Hospitality: A Lesson from My Mother
Today my mother turns 60! A red-letter day that already merits celebration is even more special to me since my mom’s recovery from breast cancer a couple of years ago. Each of her birthdays since her diagnosis has been so precious because I am just so grateful that’s she still here to be my mother. Look what a cutie she is! I was thinking yesterday about the innumerable things I’ve learned from … [Read more...]
Rainy Day Blues and Books
After a very rough night of teething for Baby Girl and not much sleep for Mama (or Daddy, for that matter), we started Day 2 of all day rain due to Tropical Storm Debby. Daniel got up early with Benjamin and changed and dressed Lucy so that I could have an extra few minutes of sleep. When I did drag myself out of bed, he had bacon, eggs, fresh tomatoes, and toast ready. How would I survive … [Read more...]
Keeping Vigil
On Friday morning when I woke up, I lit a candle we brought back from St. Augustine for a friend who was in labor. I knelt and prayed for mother and baby in front of our family altar, asking for a safe and joyful delivery. By noon, I heard that mama and baby were safe and after saying a prayer of thanksgiving for the miracle of new life, I blew out the candle and went about my day. That … [Read more...]
This Week’s Miscellany: Vol. 16
Well, m'dears, since last week I was swept away to St. Augustine and didn't have a chance to write a This Week's Miscellany, it's high time for your weekly dose of pictures, links, and weird saying from my three-year-old. (Speaking of our trip to St. Augustine to the Shrine of Our Lady of La Leche, here's a great post with some beautiful prayers.) Coming Up in the Liturgical Year: The Solemnity … [Read more...]
My First Post as Gardening Editor!
Today I'm over at Mama and Baby Love with my first official post as Gardening Editor! This post could be titled: “Don’t Lose It If Your Toddler Picks All the Unripe Tomatoes.” (Not that I would EVER do that! Ahem.) In full disclosure, I have definitely lost it when little inquisitive hands prematurely harvested the bounty of our urban garden. Numerous vegetable beds and a chicken coop take up … [Read more...]
Why You Can’t Read Twilight: A Letter to My Daughter
Today my baby girl cut her first tooth. I want to believe that by the time she and her little friends are old enough to read Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series, everyone will have forgotten about that embarrassing literary atrocity. But, I’m afraid that might be wishful thinking. I want to have an answer prepared when my daughter says, “My friend Susie gets to read the Twilight books and why can’t … [Read more...]
A Trip to the Ancient City
Last weekend my husband swept me away for a weekend in St. Augustine to celebrate our sixth anniversary (we went there for our honeymoon). After a scramble to pack with two little ones underfoot (note to self: next time pack when they’re sleeping) including tears when I couldn’t figure out how to fold up the maddening pack n’play (why do they make them so impossible?), we were off with this … [Read more...]
