You Don’t Have to Go to Grad School (to have a life of the mind)

You Don't Have to Go to Grad School (to have a life of the mind) via Carrots for Michaelmas

“If you quit this program, you’ll become intellectually stagnant,” warned a professor, and fellow mom, who was urging me to finish my art history grad program instead of stay home with my 18-month-old son. After graduation, almost all of my college friends went on to grad school. I took two years off while my husband Daniel finished his degree and we had our first child. It never really occured … [Read more...]

10 Reasons to Not Attend the Edel Gathering

January 21, 2015 By Haley 27 Comments

Have you heard? Jen and Hallie just made a few more tickets available for the Edel Gathering this July in Charleston, SC. And guess what?! Because the lovely Jenny Uebbing is expecting and won't be able to travel to emcee the event...........I'm the new emcee! AND Audrey Assad is going to give a keynote! (^make that "today"!) I've seen a lot of excitement about Edel this week. And I've … [Read more...]

Throwing a Simple Baby Shower

October 10, 2012 By Haley 13 Comments

I love to throw baby showers for my friends. It's a way to channel my excitement about a new baby coming into the world and honor my soon-to-be mama friends. However, I'm no Martha Stewart. Decor and detail are not my strong suit. I'm not a good organizer. I hate party games. I don't have a large house to host parties and I'm not a stellar chef. But, I can throw a super simple shower in my small … [Read more...]

How to Gift Friends with Meals

August 30, 2012 By Haley 2 Comments

I love this post by my dear friend Katherine full of wonderful tips for bringing the gift of food to friends in need of a home-cooked meal. Enjoy! - Haley I’ve been on the receiving end thrice recently: of a lasagna brought by a friend when I was laid low with morning sickness; of a half-dozen hearty Southern meals at my grandfather-in-law’s funeral; of a fill-the-freezer campaign by my … [Read more...]

Life Update: Housemates, Date Nights, Friends, and a Question

August 21, 2011 By Haley Leave a Comment

Well, we found them: the world's greatest housemates. Our dear friends, Brian and Lois, moved into our third bedroom/library a couple of weeks ago and will be with us as they raise support for doing long-term missions in Nepal. It is so fun to have them around to share meals with and they could not be more helpful and great. This is our fourth endeavor into communal living and we feel like we are … [Read more...]

Pregnancy Update: Week 30

August 2, 2011 By Haley 1 Comment

I can't believe that I'm 3/4 done with this pregnancy (if I carry until 40 weeks, that is ). I still feel pretty great, although I start to lose energy by around 8 or 8:30pm. I think the prenatal yoga is helping to keep my lower back from hurting too much as I carry this growing little girl around. All good news from our midwife last week: no gestational diabetes, just need some more iron so … [Read more...]

Baby Jonah and a Delicious Friday Night

February 12, 2011 By Haley 2 Comments

This is Baby Jonah and his Mama, Tryna. They accompanied Benjamin and I to  the Museum of Florida History downtown. Between the fully reconstructed Mastadon bones, animatronic giant armadillo, and steamboat exhibit, Benjamin had plenty to delight and amaze him. Benjamin is still talking about the "Museum of Flo-rida HIStory!" We will need to go again. Last night, my brother and our friends, … [Read more...]

Eating by Season: Why I Like Having a CSA Share

October 25, 2010 By Haley 2 Comments

I've had a few people ask about the CSA we have a share in, so I thought I'd post about it with some background on eating seasonal foods. In the past couple of years I've gained great appreciation for the rhythms of the Christian Year and the way that by observing it, the story of the Gospel unfolds. One way to participate in the Christian Year is to feast and fast according to the traditions of … [Read more...]

The Feast of the Archangels: Michaelmas 2010

September 30, 2010 By Haley 3 Comments

We feasted on what turned out to be a mini-Thanksgiving late last night with four friends and my brother. It was lovely to feast and celebrate St. Michael and the Archangels and share lots of orange, autumnal, beta-carotene-packed edibles at the change of season. And speaking of the change of season, Michaelmas is a feast that comes after the fall Ember Days (last Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday) … [Read more...]
