Every so often, we chat fashion at Carrots. I hope it feels like going shopping with a friend, but not having to try on jeans….or leave your couch.

Davia Knit Dress by Nine Britton

Happy Friday! It’s a million degrees in central Texas and it doesn’t look like it’s letting up anytime soon so send all the lemonade and popsicles, please. I’m taking a break from working on my book to talk frivolous fashion since I ordered my first Stitch Fix in many moons to prep for last weekend’s Edel Gathering in Austin, TX (such a blast!).

In the notes for the stylist I mentioned that I was going to be emceeing an event and was looking for some cute dresses to wear. She sent three dresses and I loved one and the others were a definite no. I also asked for a versatile necklace since I have nothing like that right now (always forget about accessories and am not a big jewelry gal).

Ok, so here’s the FFF drill when there’s a fix from SF. I share a new box of Stitch Fix items, tell ya my thoughts, get my husband Daniel and my kids’ hilarious takes (which is really the only reason you’re reading this, right?), and share what I kept and what I sent back.

(I’m not gonna go into the details of the personal styling service Stitch Fix in this post, but if you want to know more you can check out my post about whether Stitch Fix is worth it. Here’s the basics: five items chosen just for you by your stylist arrive in a box to your doorstep. You try ‘em on and send back what you don’t want.)

Just look at my husband Daniel. So pumped for another Friday Fashion Frivolity photo shoot! “I live for this,” he seemed to say.

Here goes…

Analeese Lace Dress by Brixon Ivy for Stitch Fix

Dress:Stitch Fix, Shoes: Who even knows. Maybe DSW a million years ago?

Item #1: Analeese Lace Dress by Brixon Ivy. I do love me some lace and my stylist could tell from my Pinterest board, but this dress is a big fail for me. Mostly because the shoulders are weird.

Daniel’s Take:  “This looks like a pinterest project where you were supposed to take this old lace curtain and turn it into a stylish new dress but the cut was off and it didn’t turn out like the picture at all.”

See that? It’s a little weird and bunchy in the bodice and then the cut of the shoulders is super unflattering.

It’s a little too girly for me, too. Just not my style at all. More like a misguided bridesmaid’s dress.

Medina Stretch Lace Dress by Brixon Ivy

Dress: Stitch Fix, Shoes: Same mystery shoes from the last photo.

Item #2: Medina Stretch Lace Dress by Brixon Ivy. The fit of this one was just off and again not my style. It’s VERY PROFESSIONAL. Like a mother-of-the-bride dress or something Sandra Bullock would have worn in that movie when she’s a mean lady boss and forces Ryan Reynolds to be her fiance. No thank you, Sandra Bullock.

8yo Benjamin’s Take: “I really like it. The arm frills are nice. It’s too short though.”

Davia Knit Dress by Nine Britton

Dress: Stitch Fix, Boots: (secondhand) ThredUp

Item #3: Davia Knit Dress by Nine Britton. And we have a winner! This dress is extremely me. I love the colors/pattern, the fit and IT HAS POCKETS. Perfect casual dress for summer. It wasn’t quite dressy enough to emcee at Edel in, but I kept it and have gotten so much use out of it in the past couple of weeks!

Daniel’s Take: “Benjamin likes the diamonds. I like the 90s retro feel.”

Check out the cute back cut out. I can even wear a regular bra which is muy importante because weird bra situations are not my cup of tea.

Ashton Crochet Lace Kimono by Pixley

Kimono: Stitch Fix , Top: Stitch Fix , Jeans: (secondhand) ThredUp, Shoes: Saltwaters from ModCloth

Item #4: Ashton Crochet Lace Kimono by Pixley. Ah, back to lace fails. I love me a good kimono but this one is way too boxy for somebody short like me.

It’s a good idea….for someone else to wear, but nope.

Double nope.

Daniel’s Take:”…how old does your stylist think you are?”

Tina Fringe Pendant by Romolo Stitch Fix

Necklace: Stitch Fix Dress: Stitch Fix

Item #5: Tina Fringe Pendant by Romolo. We should end on a high note, right? This necklace is just what I was looking for and I’ve worn it everyday since it arrived on my doorstep. Casual enough to wear with t-shirts, dressy enough to wear to a fancy occasion. Perfection.

Daniel’s Take: “I like it. You should hide it before the girls break it.”

So I kept the patterned dress and the necklace and sent all the lace fails back! What would you have kept?

My daughter (10) and I enjoys your fashion posts! I laughed so hard when I read “90s retro feel” gosh–I’m really old when 90s is already retro ? (90s was pretty much my middle school, HS and College) ! Have a blessed weekend Carrots Family ?

The blue one! I’d have kept the blue one. And then I’d have let it hang in my closet and make me feel guilty for two years because it’s all wrong for my figure. The one that really says Pinterest fail to me is the lace kimono. The lace is beautiful in its own right, and it’s tempting to make something awesome and wearable out of it, but it just…. doesn’t go. It reminds me just a little of a beautiful lace vest I started knitting the day the pattern was published. A major error was published about the time I got to the armpits, and I had the choice to start over or rewrite the entire top of the pattern. It was a valiant fail.

I love both lace dresses! Except for the shoulder part, you’re right (couldn’t see that in the first picture). Why?… When the colour is so right (blue) and the fit so right.

Hailey, random question for you and wasn’t sure where to ask it, but do you have any recommendation for Marian art for the home? Thanks! I love learning from you ideas for increasing the experience of Christ for my children.
