This Week’s Miscellany: Vol. 170 (Summer tomatoes, dances, and Anne)

Welcome to Carrots! I'm so glad you're here. This is where I share thoughts on liturgical living, faith, parenting, culture, and an extra dose of Jane Austen. You can sign up for my email newsletter here to stay in touch, or look me up on Instagram!

Welcome to This Week’s Miscellany, the occasional round up of Carrots family updates, photo dumps, books I’m reading, links I loved, and big news.

It’s beginning to feel a lot like summer. The 90 degree weather has hit (which I actually don’t mind at all–it’s only the 100+ temps that get to me). And while I know we’re about to be boiling for the next 4 months, it’s been so beautiful since the end of January that it seems hardly fair. So I’m ready, summer. Bring it on.

Daniel’s front yard garden beds are bearing fruit and we’re drowning in tomatoes which is a good problem to have. In other news, I killed the ONE HOUSE PLANT I have. So….clearly it’s good that I’m married to someone who remembers to water things.

Benjamin and I attended the parish Mother Son Dance and had a blast. He BEGGED me to go and since I doubt I’ve got many more years where that will be the case, we made it a priority. I got him to dance with me for two dances, but then he just wanted to look for snacks, but I’ll take what I can get.

I’ve been sneaking away to write as much as I can. My favorite coffee place that is usually swarming with Baylor students empties out during the summer and I’m taking full advantage of it. The bacon biscuits they serve may also be a factor.

Thank you SO MUCH for all your comments, emails, and encouragement about my big book announcement earlier this week! I haven’t had a chance to respond to everyone, but I cherished each comment and note. THANK YOU–for your offers to pray for the process, for your enthusiasm, and all your promises to pre-order. As I said, I couldn’t do this without you!

Fun news!

I’ll be emceeing this year’s Edel Gathering in Austin, TX this August! I am so excited, especially since some of my favorite folks will be speaking this year. Check out some interviews with these lovely ladies that Edel co-founder Jen Fulwiler shared. I hope to see you in August!

I wrote my first piece at America Magazine about the new “Anne with an E” series. I was super nervous about writing for them because I’ve never done a free lance review like that but it ended up being the most popular piece on their site! So crazy. I guess there are other people that are as passionate about Anne as I am. The next email newsletter of little posts I don’t share here on the blog is going to be all about Anne and my favorite pieces I’ve read about the new series (from both sides). So sign up here (it’s free, of course), so you don’t miss it.

I was fascinated by this piece about Madeleine L’Engle in the New Yorker. I love her books and now I want to read them all over again.

This was a beautiful tribute to the Manchester victims and to motherhood by Sarah Bessey.

Podcasts:

Tsh Oxenreider and I shared some ideas for your summer reading lists on The Simple Show podcast.

Christy and I interviewed Justina Kopp about being the mother of QUADRUPLETS and we also chatted with Dr. Jessica Hooten Wilson about why reading books with scandalous themes is good for your soul.

Wishing you a beautiful weekend!

Lots of love,

Haley

What is the name of the coffee shop? I’m going to Waco in a few weeks and it looks like a fun place to stop by.
