Friday Fashion Frivolity: Just Say No to Fringe (My latest Stitch Fix)

Welcome to Carrots! I'm so glad you're back. You can sign up for my email newsletter here to stay in touch, or look me up on Instagram!

Every so often, we chat fashion at Carrots. I hope it feels like going shopping with a friend, but not having to try on jeans….or leave your couch.

Sia Embroidery Peasant Top by Skies are Blue from Stitch Fix

So here’s the drill. I share a new box of Stitch Fix items, tell ya my thoughts, get my husband Daniel’s take, and share what I kept and what I sent back.

(I’m not gonna go into the details of the personal styling service Stitch Fix in this post, but if you want to know more you can check out my posts about whether Stitch Fix is worth it, how it compares to other styling services like Golden Tote. Here’s the basics: five items chosen just for you by your stylist arrive in a box to your doorstep. You try ‘em on and send back what you don’t want.)

I have to admit that this fix kind of missed the mark for me. I did end up keeping one item, but the others were just not me at all or felt same old, same old. I don’t know if it means it’s time to branch out and try a new stylist or if I should just keep giving more detailed feedback to my current stylist (who has sent me some pretty amazing fixes in the past that were spot on). Anyhow, you’ll see what I mean.

SFDanielYawn

My trusty photographer/husband/farmer wasn’t yawning at the idea of taking pictures for another fashion post. No sir! That’s a yawn of excitement. With Daniel it’s all fashion, all the time.

Mavado Fringe Detail Poncho Cardigan by Absolutely Stitch Fix

Cardigan: Stitch Fix, Top: Old Navy, Leggings: Stitch Fix, Shoes: Clarks

Item #1: Mavado Fringe Detail Poncho Cardigan by Absolutely. I guessed I would hate this piece. And I was totally right! There’s just so much of it. And so much fringe. And I am not into fringe.

Mavado Fringe Detail Poncho Cardigan by Absolutely Stitch Fix

Yup. That’s pretty much how I feel about it. It was kind of like wearing a blanket which isn’t all bad but….bleh. Not my style at all. Maybe it would help it I let the wind blow in my hair.

Mavado Fringe Detail Poncho Cardigan by Absolutely Stitch Fix

Nope. Still don’t like it.

Daniel’s Take: “This would keep you very warm in a nursing home.“

Bury Embroidered Top by Skies are Blue Stitch Fix

Top: Stitch Fix, Leggings: Stitch Fix

Item #2: Bury Embroidered Top by Skies are Blue. OK, so I like this top. I really do. But it’s the exact same cut as the black Old Navy top I wore with that horrendous fringe-y thing. And since I already had a black top the same style–minus the embroidery which I do kind of like, I said no. One only needs so many black 3/4 length sleeved shirts.

Daniel’s Take: “I’m getting a mental image of a Ukrainian Renaissance Fair. In a good way.”

And next up…sorry about the weird exposure on the photo. I BLAME THE PHOTOGRAPHER (the one who doesn’t get paid and who only takes these pictures because he married me and a kind, kind soul).

Athenia Crochet Back Top by Papermoon from Stitch Fix

Top: Stitch Fix, Pants: Stitch Fix, Shoes: Lucky Brand

Item #3: Athenia Crochet Back Top by Papermoon. From the front, I kinda like it. I gravitate towards this color. But the back was too much.

Do you have to wear a certain kind of bra? Wear a shirt underneath? Too much work.

Daniel:”Ok. If you need a basic, burgundy shirt. Whoa! Look at the back! Didn’t see that coming.”

Back you go.

Kiley Ankle Zip Legging by Rune from Stitch Fix

Top, Cardigan, and Leggings: Stitch Fix, Shoes: Lucky Brand

Item #4: Kiley Ankle Zip Legging by Rune. I like these ok. But I just got a pair of black leggings I LOVE in my last fix.

Kiley Ankle Zip Legging by Rune from Stitch Fix

And I really don’t love the ankle zippers. They make me think south Florida old ladies. Which is fine. But I’m not an old lady or in south Florida.

Daniel’s Take: “Good thing they’ve got those zippers. Those will definitely come in real handy.”

OK, and FINALLY the winner:

Sia Embroidery Peasant Top by Skies are Blue from Stitch Fix

Top: Stitch Fix, Jeans: Stitch Fix, Shoes: Target

Item #5: Sia Embroidery Peasant Top by Skies are Blue. Now THAT’S what I’m talking about. It’s simple, but the embroidery makes it interesting. It’s not a bag, but it’s not TOO tailored around the middle which after 3 kids is always a mistake.

Daniel’s Take: “I like it. You’re a fancy blue peasant.”

SF16Item53

So all in all, I kept just ONE item this time.  I adore the shirt I kept and wear it constantly. But in general, wasn’t super in love with this fix.

What did you think about this fix? Thumbs up, thumbs down? What would you have kept?

I received the exact same cream colored fringe thing in my last fix. I had the same thoughts as you did, and being 6 months pregnant didn’t make it look very good either. I had to laugh when I saw it again! 🙂

I love the top you kept and I honesty kinda like the cardigan too. It might look cute belted. Or maybe I’m only thinking this way because I’m 6 weeks postpartum and living in a cold climate.

Maybe belted! I think my torso is the wrong length to belt things well. It was certainly comfortable.

I really like the black embroidered top! Like you said, though, one only needs so many 3/4 sleeve black tops. The peasant top that you settled on is quite amazing, and it looks great on you!

I would actually totally wear that fringe cardigan with one of my flowy hippie skirts. I like the variation in the stitch patterns, and I think it looks comfy! I’m not big into wearing fringe, but for one weird clothing item to wear every now and then, I’d do it. I think it’s a fairly complicated cardigan to work with, though, ’cause it is kind of massive and shapless and weird!

Thanks, AnneMarie! I liked that black top, too. Just seems like it wasn’t a NEED since I already have something similar. And yes! The shapelessness was tricky.

First off, I love these posts. Second, I almost wonder if that burgundy top is intended to be worn without a bra. I hope not, but it kind of makes me wonder.

I wondered that, too! Because….just no. But how else would it not look weird on the back unless you word a camisole or something?

Oh I think the fringe cardigan was the best item in the bunch! So interesting and unique, and would look great with really slim-cut tees and skinny jeans.

It’s always amazing to me that items that I look at and think, “Nope! This would never be in my closet” and someone else’s absolute favorites! It’s what’s fun about fashion 🙂

First, I love the blue shirt! Good choice. I want one too! Also, I thought you might find it funny to know that my husband was thinking of getting me a stitch fix subscription for Christmas, and he wanted to know a little about it, so he googled Catholic, Carrots, Stitch Fix or something like that because he remembered me talking about your blog a lot and couldn’t exactly remember the title or your name… and he did in fact come upon your Friday fashion posts, and he read through them and thought they were funny and enjoyed your husband’s comments/lively participation… so–hehe. But in the end, did he get the subscription? NO! (but that’s ok, I love him anyway!)

I have those leggings! Most of the times I’ve worn them it’s been with boots, so the zipper doesn’t show. HOWEVER…the boots press on the zipper and irritate the crap out of my ankle. So good call!

Love the top you kept. The embroidered back would have been nice if it was just a little at the top, but the whole back, no. And a shirt underneath in Texas? No.

Agreed! If it was just at the top, that would have been perfect. And double shirts only works for a short time in the TX heat!

“Fancy Blue Peasant” is a genius name for a folk-rock band. I’ll let you guys have it, though, since I’m 34 and would look foolish starting a band. And how about those zippers? Not just zippers, but GOLD zippers. They definitely take me back to 1992, when all my friends ratted their bangs and wore purple or teal elastic jeans with zippers on the legs. I was the lone dissenter, who dressed like a 40-year-old school teacher in plaid stirrup pants and a tucked-in polo shirt. STIRRUP PANTS! PLAID! Let’s see if Stitch Fix can hook you up with a pair of those, eh?
