Bookshelf Love: Our Library Shelves

Since we started homeschooling our 3-year-old for Preschool our stack of library books has grown by leaps and bounds and started taking over our living room. I saw the idea to use IKEA spice racks as children’s bookshelves that’s so popular on pinterest and mentioned it to my husband. “I can make that,” he said.

He put them together and Benjamin “helped” paint them and now they are lovely and displaying library books in our hallway.

We put them up at a low enough height that Benjamin could reach the first two shelves but high enough that they would be out of reach for Baby Lucy.

I love the pretty embellishment on the front of the shelves.

How do you keep track of your library books? Do you have a designated spot for them?

How awesome are those – love the design, too! We have our library books on a low, accessible shelf in the living area of our house. I’d love to have something like this one day.

Also, now looking up ‘B is for Bulldozer’ to add to our “to read” list. =)

Thanks! Baby Lucy is surprisingly gentle with what Benjamin calls “un-board books.” But, it still makes me nervous when she’s flipping through a library book, so, it’s nice to have them out of her reach but in B’s reach. ‘B is for Bulldozer’ is a current fave (for a construction-crazed boy). We have loved ‘Eating the Alphabet’ and ‘A Was an Apple Pie’ that you recommended on your list!

Right now it’s just me and the Hubby so a basket in our living room is perfect. When we have kids that are old enough to enjoy library books I might have to implement your idea 🙂

I have a pretty basket in our living room that I dream of filling with pretty books. Right now it just has magazines I don’t care about since it’s in range of Baby Lucy’s destruction 🙂

Could you tell me how you mounted these to the wall? Something similar would be perfect for us, but I’m not sure how I would hang them. Thanks!

Sure, Michelle! Daniel drilled holes in the back on the shelves and then screwed them into the wall. I don’t know what kind exactly he used, but I can ask if you need to know! They seem really sturdy.
