Why Do We Still Love Jane Austen?

September 11, 2014 By Haley 39 Comments

Why Do We Still Love Jane Austen? // Carrots for Michaelmas

It’s been 200 years since Jane Austen’s novels were published and yet, Jane mania is still in the air. If you don’t believe me, just look to the 12ft inflatable Mr. Darcy (eerily favoring Colin Firth) floating in London’s Hyde Park last summer. (Clearly, I’m not the only one who loves the 1995 Pride and Prejudice miniseries.) Modern Janeites remain captivated, but do we know why Austen’s so … [Read more...]

Slowing Down Around the Table (My first post over at Kitchen Stewardship)

September 3, 2014 By Haley 3 Comments

Remember how I told you that I'll be contributing to one of my favorite blogs, Kitchen Stewardship, once a month? Well my first post is up! "...But dinnertime is about much more than cramming wholesome calories into our families (although that’s a worthy goal!). It’s not just about consuming the “right” things, it’s about savoring the ingredients, process, and connections. It’s about … [Read more...]

This Week’s Miscellany: Vol. 100 (100!)

August 23, 2014 By Haley 18 Comments

ONE HUNDRED?! Wow. I feel like I should have something exciting to offer for sticking with me all the way to 100! But all I've got is the usual programming of photos, and links, and miscellany. We had a tea party for our "first day of school" last Monday. Honestly, school days don't look much different from summer days. We write letters and mail them for handwriting/spelling practice. We … [Read more...]

This Week’s Miscellany: Vol. 94

July 4, 2014 By Haley 7 Comments

It's been one of those weeks. Stomach bug weeks. Lots of extra laundry, sad little ones, fevers, and enough Netflix to fry our brains while we all pile on mama's bed and recover. Poor Lucy had it the worst. Temp of 103.5! That's the worst fever we'd had over here in as long as I can remember. She was the most darling little invalid. Gwen and Daniel were mostly unscathed. Everybody's … [Read more...]

Answer Me This! Kendra’s in France, So I Ask ALL THE QUESTIONS!

May 17, 2014 By Haley 33 Comments

While the lovely Kendra is globetrotting in Europe, I get to host her awesome link up: Answer me this! Here's my answers to last week's questions. Next week's questions are below, so join in on the fun!   1. What's the scariest thing that's ever been in your yard?   If you're talking about our current yard, I'd probably have to say our creepy next-door-neighbor who always seems to be … [Read more...]

Benjamin, Native Texan, speaks his mind and only a few more hours left for books

April 27, 2014 By Haley 5 Comments

If you get the Carrots newsletter (you can sign up on the right hand side bar), you know that we've been on a long family trip to New Orleans and Texas for a friend's wedding. We have had the most wonderful time enjoying friends and being together as a family. The kids are loving having Daddy off work. In Waco, where we used to live, we've gone to the amazing Cameron Park Zoo which is beautiful … [Read more...]

Eating Seasonally Through the Christian Year…

April 16, 2014 By Haley 1 Comment

It's Holy Week, folks! This morning I'm honored to be at The Humbled Homemaker chatting about a liturgically-centered dinner table. So head on over with your Monday morning cup of coffee (unless you gave up coffee for Lent, in which case, may God give you strength...we're on the homestretch to Easter, people!) And don't forget about the Ultimate Homemaking Bundle 6 day sale beginning next … [Read more...]

Let his blood be upon us and upon our children

April 14, 2014 By Haley 47 Comments

On Palm Sunday, I always shudder to say the responses in the Gospel reading. If you've never been to a Catholic Mass on Palm Sunday, the Passion is read aloud and the congregation reads the part of the crowd calling for Jesus' crucifixion. I shudder because by adding my voice to the shout "Crucify him!" I have to face the reality of my own sin. My betrayal and denial of God in my heart each day. … [Read more...]

The News I’ve Been Dying to Tell You!

February 5, 2014 By Haley 35 Comments

Here I am bursting with the news I've been dying to tell you for weeks: No, I'm not pregnant (seems like a reasonable caveat with my track record.) The BIG NEWS is about the Edel Gathering organized by lovely and wonderful ladies, Jen Fulwiler and Hallie Lord. It is going to be an AMAZING weekend of renewal and fun for moms (and conversation with other grown ups!) in Austin, TX July 25th … [Read more...]
