Friday Fashion Frivolity: April Is Basically Summer (Get Me Some Shorts)

Welcome to Carrots! I'm so glad you're back. You can sign up for my email newsletter here to stay in touch, or look me up on Instagram!

Every so often, we chat fashion at Carrots. I hope it feels like going shopping with a friend, but not having to try on jeans….or leave your couch.

I know my Canadian friends and some of my yankee friends are still getting snow. I. can’t. even. Come sit on my back porch with me and drink sweet tea because I like my April to feel like summer, thank you very much. And 80 degrees and sunny is my ideal weather.

The problem with warm weather is that I haven’t found a pair of shorts that I love since I had babies. And shorts are kind of a must for Florida. But the past couple of years I’ve just survived with dresses, jeans, and that one pair of shorts that only fits during pregnancy. The shorts situation could be better, so I asked my Stitch Fix stylist to send over some summery shorts and skirts since I’m actually in a good place with pants and tops.

(I’m not gonna go into the details of the personal styling service Stitch Fix here, but if you want to know more you can check out my posts about whether Stitch Fix is worth it, how it compares to other styling services like Golden Tote. Here’s all you need to know: five items chosen just for you by your stylist arrive in a box to your doorstep. You try ‘em on and send back what you don’t want.)

DanielSF

I asked my husband Daniel to snap some photos of my latest Stitch Fix and boy, oh boy, was he thrilled! Can’t you tell from his expression?

Sally Cuffed Short by Liverpool, Stitch Fix

Shirt: gifted, Shorts: Stitch Fix, Sandals: Target

Item #1: Sally Cuffed Short by Liverpool. Happy dance! Shorts that fit! They’re a little bit stretchy and I plan to wear them with EVERYTHING. And this is my favorite t-shirt of all time. So soft. And long enough to wear through half a pregnancy. Also, Waco where I went to college. Heart. Kissy face. XOXO.

Sally Cuffed Short by Liverpool, Stitch Fix

I have really short legs, so shorts usually look weird/terrible on me. I was pretty shocked that my stylist was able to find some for me that I didn’t hate.

Daniel’s Take: “I like ’em. I mean, they look good. They’re shorts.”

And for shorts, round 2!

Finnegan Roll Cuff Chino Short by Dear John, Stitch Fix

Shorts: Stitch Fix, Shirt: Old Navy, Sandals: Target, Bag: Connected in Hope

Item #2: Finnegan Roll Cuff Chino Short: Dear John. I didn’t think I would like these at all until I tried them on. I guess the word  “chino” makes me think “mom shorts.” And maybe that’s what these are. But hey, I’m a mom. I’m diggin’ it.

Finnegan Roll Cuff Chino Short by Dear John, Stitch Fix

Daniel’s Take: “It’s like you’re off to the Hamptons! I’m not sure what the Hamptons are, but it looks like you’re off to them.”

Finnegan Roll Cuff Chino Short by Dear John, Stitch Fix

MOM SHORTS FTW. Keepin’ ’em. Can’t stop me.

Waters Maxi Dress: Papermoon, Stitch Fix

Dress: Stitch Fix, Shoes: Target

Item #3: Waters Maxi Dress: Papermoon. Softest dress in the world.

Waters Maxi Dress: Papermoon, Stitch Fix

I would have kept it, except the one maxi dress I own is also black and white and very similar. And how many black and white maxi dresses does a girl need?

Waters Maxi Dress: Papermoon, Stitch Fix

Daniel’s Take: “Don’t you already own this dress?”

Well, no, but close.

Karlie Woven Dress: Gilli, Stitch Fix

Dress: Stitch Fix, Shoes: Target

Item #4: Karlie Woven Dress: Gilli. Oh my. Yikes, I’m not sure where to start with this one. What’s not wrong with this dress?

Karlie Woven Dress: Gilli, Stitch Fix

OK, now I’m just laughing. Huge in all the wrong places. And not a fan of this pattern.

Daniel’s Take:  “It’s like a dress you’d wear to a homeschool dance. That you made yourself.”

Arya Distressed Pencil Skirt: Mavi, Stitch Fix

Top: Stitch Fix, Skirt: Stitch Fix, Shoes: Target

Item #5: Arya Distressed Pencil Skirt: Mavi. Part of me really liked this skirt, but it was priced too high. And I’ve never been one to like holes in my clothes when I buy ’em.

Arya Distressed Pencil Skirt: Mavi, Stitch Fix

I was kind of hoping Daniel would think it was great and convince me to keep it, but not so much.

Daniel’s Take: “What is this? It can’t be retro if Britney Spears wore it in a music video. NOT RETRO YET.”

Arya Distressed Pencil Skirt: Mavi, Stitch Fix

That’s probably true. And it was too expensive. Goodbye, skirt.

Tyson Split Neck Renee C, Stitch Fix

And that’s it, folks!

I just kept the two pairs of shorts, but I’m so happy with them. When I first started using Stitch Fix, I wanted to add exciting items to my closet, but now I’m also a big fan of getting basics from them. This fix definitely saved me many painful hours in the dressing room. Next time I’m going to request some skirts. I think since I’m so short flattering fit and length is tricky. But hey, Stitch Fix is offering petite sizes now, so I should hit that up.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend! (We’re going to see the Avett Brothers! Eek! I think the last real show we went to was to see Ben Folds five years ago.)

Okay first, I never consisted myself much of a “fashion person”, but I must say, I love your fashion posts so much. I am in the process of upgrading my wardrobe from stuff I wrote as a teenaged tomboy to “stuff a young adult mom should wear”, whatever that means.

I know you’re growing your hair out, but I totally love it right now. Again, I know nothing about hair, but I totally think what you have going on is a thing.

I have a very similar pair of jean shorts that I almost gave away recently because I never see other moms wear them and I questioned whether or not they were “grown-up enough”. I ended up keeping them because they are so comfy and I don’t do well when I am hot and uncomfortable. They look good on you, too. Both shorts do.

I also liked the maxi and at first I loved the dress, but then noticed it was huge on you. Good call. I am also looking to add a denim skirt to my wardrobe, but they never feel right. I don’t think I could do distressed anymore either. I would feel like I was still in high school.

Agreed. I feel like I’m in high school with distressed denim. And it’s only been this past year that I’m starting to have a somewhat grown-up wardrobe. And thanks for the hair compliment! I just got it trimmed and I’m liking it.

Agreeing with Amanda on your hair! Cute color and length right now! Wish I could pull off the side swept bangs like that 🙂

And ugh shorts…I’m still hanging on to the one pair that fits from high school and the one pair that fits from pregnancy. I don’t even know how I got through last summer come to think of it. I guess its time for mom short shopping too. I’m loving yours!

Thanks, Kathy! Ugh. Shorts shopping is just the worst. But my lack of shorts last year did result in heat rash whenever I’d try to wear jeans. So I’m excited about this bright, new horizon of mom shorts, haha.

Ha! Daniel’s comments are totally the best. “I dont know what the Hamptons are, but you look like you’re off to them.” that’s totally what I want in my wardrobe, lol!

It’s in the 70s and sunny here too. I wish this was forever what summer was like. I have a friend who lives in Gainesville, and we’re always like….”when is it october and where is my pumpkin coffee?!?!” I, as they say, “cant even” with summer 😉

The shorts look awesome! Shorts are so hard….cute sandals too!

I love the shorts (both pairs), and the maxi dress did look lovely, and I’m in absolute agreement about purchasing clothes with factory-made holes. I’d also like to say that I think Daniel is a wonderful writer and a super articulate and considerate individual whose insights I frequently find very valuable (since I read his blog, too), and I love his commentary on your fashion posts…but, really, I’m just so tired of people taking pot-shots at homeschoolers. Plenty of homeschoolers in the world know how to dress well, and plenty of non-homeschoolers wear frumpy, ill-fitting clothes. Where does this idea come from that homeschoolers are all fashion disasters? And I don’t mean to rant; this just touched a tender spot. Sorry!

Well, as someone who was homeschooled and who now homeschools my own brood I know exactly where the stereotype comes from, haha. Especially in the early 90s when homeschooling was not as popular. Yikes! I think it’s kind of like “mom jeans.” Do all moms wear frumpy jeans? Do women who aren’t mom sometimes wear frumpy jeans? The point is that we’re all familiar with the stereotype which is why it’s funny. Daniel’s clearly a fan of homeschoolers since he married one and home schools his own kids.

I refuse to wear those pant capri mom pants. And sometimes, you just need some shorts! The Avett Bros rock– have so much fun! Also, got my first timeshel photos today and LOVE them! So much better than groovebook! You also made the right call on only keeping the shorts and not the dress or skirt.

Okay, the chino shorts are gorgeous, that outfit was my favorite especially with your way too cute hair. This is my first viewing of your fashion posts. I liked it A LOT! I am 8 months postpartum from baby #5 and my first cesarean AND I’m over 40. (Here’s the part I hate: my little girl did not survive, Mireya had a rare kidney disease which caused her not to produce amniotic fluid. Her lungs did not develop enough) so as much as i have never been a fashionista, i really am not now. I could kind of care less especially with this foreign body. I’m sure my hubby would love for me to do something like this. Thank you for sharing.
