(Orc pumpkin suggested by Benjamin, executed by Daniel) Last year Benjamin was 3 and it was the first he'd ever heard of Halloween. Not that we're opposed, it's just that we're lazy we didn't see a need to load him up with candy or tear our hair out making costumes if he was just as happy not knowing. But last year, his toddler sleuthiness sniffed it out and he talked about nothing else. So, we … [Read more...]

Stop Doing, Start Being
From the day he was born, Benjamin, my four-year-old, has fought sleep. No season of my life has been as difficult as the newborn days of exhaustion we faced as we attempted to care for an infant who never slept. He had to be sleeping on one of us or sleep simply wouldn’t happen. When he was awake, he was crying , because he was just so tired. After reading a great piece by Auntie Leila over at … [Read more...]
This Week’s Miscellany: Vol. 68 (Allume Edition)
Whew! Catching my breath. I had an amazing weekend in Greenville, SC with my cute travel buddies at Allume (basically a Christian women's blogging conference). And we stayed with my darling auntie and got to see some sweet cousins as a bonus. This little drool-monster was soooooo good. She slept through the night 3 nights in a row (!) and it was ah-mazing. Her raven tresses had many … [Read more...]
To Lucy, on her Second Birthday
Oh, Lucy, Lucy, my Lucy, Nothing could have prepared me for how much I love you. From the moment I realized I was pregnant, I loved you more than I’d ever loved anything. I don’t mean I loved your brother less, I mean that my heart expanded in that moment and has never been the same. I loved you so when you turned one, but I know that I will love two even more. None of my pregnancies have been … [Read more...]
To the Bookish Mother of Littles
You knew having a baby would change things. Nights out on the town would be few and far between. You wouldn’t sleep much during those newborn weeks. But if you’re like me, you weren’t expecting your bookworm tendencies to be so thwarted. Maybe you were an English major in college. Maybe you studied literature in grad school. Maybe you’ve just always been a bibliophile. But now you find yourself … [Read more...]
This Week’s Miscellany: Vol. 67
(Mischievous Benjamin and Skeptical Lucy with their sweet baby cousin.) Coming Up in the Liturgical Year: We're getting close to Hallowtide (All Hallows Eve, All Saints, and All Souls) and Bonnie of A Knotted Life just started the bestest video series about celebrating the liturgical year with children. Did you know a jack o' lantern can teach children about redemptive suffering? Yeah, me … [Read more...]
Getting Organized with Mama’s Notebooks (Review and GIVEAWAY!)
It’s a weird confession for a blogger to make but here it is: I’m not very good at technology. I love pen and paper. I’ll probably never fall in love with an eReader. I like the feel of a book in hand. I don’t know if it’s because I’m a visual learner or if I’m just terrible at keeping digital files organized, but tools like Pinterest never really work for me to keep track of ideas (which is why I … [Read more...]
Nosepickers, St. Peter, and the Greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven
Some thoughts from Daniel... After Haley’s “Kids in Mass” post was featured on Catholic Exchange, a few colorful commenters descended to share their opinions. Some were less than charitable. Maybe they mistakenly thought we let our children roam the aisles and regularly scream bloody murder through the homily. But most people were supportive. One positive comment that stood out to me was a … [Read more...]
This Week’s Miscellany: Vol. 66 (and giveaway winner)
Call me the Craigslist Queen, y'all, because we got the find of the century! Actually I just got really lucky, because on the day I decided the kiddos really need a backyard swing set, someone posted this bad boy and with the help of all our male extended family members and a Uhaul, we transported it to our house. Now we just need to set up the swing part. In the meantime, Lucy is totally … [Read more...]
Creating a Liturgical Year Binder
This is a guest post from Kelly of This Ain't the Lyceum, one of my favorite blogs. I can't wait to create one of these binders because when I keep ideas only on Pinterest they're out of sight, out of mind and I simply won't remember the recipes, activities, and prayers I wanted to do! - Haley Our home library contains an impressive amount of Catholic books, however when it comes to praying as a … [Read more...]
