Due to Katherine and Sonya’s recommendations I borrowed Kathryn Stockett’s The Help from the library.

I really enjoyed it. Startling to realize that how recently the Civil Rights Movement occurred.

I’m also still reading Kristin Lavransdatter. It’s so good. Please read it.

Benjamin is currently loving this one:

He calls it “Caps” and loves to make the Monkey sound and shake his fist like the peddler.

What are you reading these days?

I loved “The Help”. Can’t believe I never recommended it to you! I have met Kathryn, she lives here in Atlanta and is nice and very normal.

Also, “Caps for Sale” is a great classic. Those crazy monkeys. The first time I read it to Ava she couldn’t figure out what “caps” were… “das so silly” she’d say and then she made up a “caps for sale” song that peddler sang. Very cute.

I am currently reading “Teacher Man” by Frank McCourt– Author of “Angela’s Ashes”. So far it is wonderful. I think you would enjoy it. But the verdict is still out.

Well, the book takes place in Jackson, MS close to where my father-in-law grew up and the depiction of the South is fascinating. It’s very honest about racial inequality in the South without being completely negative about southern culture. It’s written from three women’s perspectives: two black maids and a young white writer. It’s well-written, thought-provoking, and definitely a page turner. It’s longish-450 pages but reads quickly. I would definitely recommend it!
